Maintenance FAQs

How many miles can I go before my car needs an oil change?
As a rule of thumb, always consult your vehicle’s owner’s manual for the time intervals you can go between oil changes for your specific model. If you can’t find the information in your manual, please feel free to call one of our passionate service advisors at Conyers Nissan – we’re always available to answer any and all questions you may have.
How often will my car’s battery need to be replaced?
First, start by checking the warranty date that will be printed on an informational label on the battery itself. You’ll see a letter and a number combination. The letter stands for the month – A equals January, B equals February, C equals March, etc. The next two numbers are the year. A listing of C18 therefore works out to March 2018. Make sure that you change your car’s battery prior to this date to help avoid issues down the road.
What should I do if my vehicle doesn’t start for some reason?
A car that fails to start could be caused by a wide range of different reasons. Dead batteries, bad starters or even faulty alternators are all likely culprits. Stretched or broken timing belts, malfunctioning sensors and other issues with equipment could cause the same issue.
Pay attention to exactly what happens when you try to start your car. If you hear a click when you engage the ignition, it very well may be an issue with your starter – though in this case, a dead battery is just as likely. If you happen to have a voltmeter handy, use it to check the battery. If you have at least 12 volts of power when your car is OFF, your problem likely rests with your starter – provided that there are no other critical component failures that you’re dealing with.
What does it mean if my “Service Engine Soon” indicator light comes on?

These lights are here for a reason. This video will let you know what that reason is.

This light means one thing and one thing only: get your car into our Conyers Nissan service center as soon as you can. The only way to properly diagnose the issue is to plug a code reader into your vehicle, which will not only tell us what is wrong but also what we should do to fix it. If the light comes on and turns off again by itself, you’re experiencing what is referred to as a “soft code.” This means that your oxygen sensor is trying to tell you about an incorrect mixture of oxygen within your car’s system.

Tires

When the treads on a tire become worn, they have difficulty gripping the road, which leads to longer stopping distances. In addition, worn treads make driving in the rain or snow more dangerous.

About how often will I need to purchase new tires for my car?
The answer to this question will depend on a range of factors including your driving style, where you drive and what type of tire you currently have. If you constantly drive on rough surfaces like gravel or unpaved roads, you’ll need tires sooner rather than later. If you have a set of soft rubber “highway tires,” they’ll also wear faster than others. Every tire has an estimated distance it can go (measured in miles) before it will need to be replaced.
When I get new tires, should I have them aligned?
Generally speaking, this is a good idea. If your car’s tires happen to have an uneven wear pattern, it’s a definite sign that an alignment will be necessary.
How will I know when I should buy new tires?
Keep an eye out for wear, along with imperfections like low pressure. If you see uneven wear with your tires, it could mean you need an alignment – but it could also mean it’s time for a new set. Between the treads of each tire will be a wear bar – a little bump of rubber. When your tires wear to the point where the tread is just about even with the wear bars, it’s time for a new set.
What kind of tires are the best?
The answer to this question varies depending on what “best” means for your situation. Always let one of our Conyers Nissan service advisors know how often you drive, what type of surfaces you drive on or more. They will always be able to recommend the best set of tires for your own personal needs.

Parts FAQs

How often will I need to replace belts and hoses?
If you take a look at your hoses and see that they’ve started to get soft or are showing cracks, they should be replaced. A common sign that belts will need to be changed is dry rotting, which is when the bottom of the belt is shiny or if it can no longer keep up with necessary tension.
What are OEM parts and why are they important?
Short for “original equipment manufacturer,” OEM just means that the company that made your car also made the parts used inside. Generic parts may fit, but they likely won’t have the long-lasting quality that OEM parts will.

Certified Professionals

Why is having my vehicle serviced with certified professionals important?
Certified and highly trained technicians have the type of knowledge and real-world experience necessary to work on your vehicle. If you need an important repair, you can rest easy knowing that it was performed correctly the first time and with only the highest quality parts.
What are the dangers of using non-certified mechanics?
For starters, you won’t be able to know with 100% certainty that they’re up to the task in the first place. You don’t know that they’re using OEM parts and they may not even offer a warranty on their work.
When should I use a certified auto repair technician?
When an ASE certified technician makes repairs to your vehicle, you have the peace of mind that only comes with knowing your repairs were done the right way and with the highest quality parts available. Using OEM parts means that not only do you have a warranty on the service, but you also have a warranty on the part being replaced. If an unfortunate mistake is made, which while rare can happen, everything is taken care of with no additional cost to you.
Likewise, certified auto repair technicians are trained on the advanced computer systems that modern day vehicles have that allow them to properly diagnose issues, leaving no margin for error.
What is ASE Certification?
ASE Certification is only awarded after a technician either passes a test in their specialty or, if they’re a master technician, they have passed a group of tests. Master technicians in particular have two years of documented, verifiable hands-on experience.
For cars, all master technicians must pass eight tests. For collision repair technicians, they must pass four tests. The series of testing for automobiles and light trucks includes subjects like the following:
  • • Engine performance
  • • Engine repair
  • • Heating and air conditioning
  • • Automatic transmission/transaxle
  • • Electrical/Electronic systems
  • • Manual drivetrain and axles
  • • Brakes
  • • Suspension and steering
Master technicians who specialize in body repair and collision are required to pass the following four tests:
  • • Mechanical and electrical components
  • • Paint and refinishing
  • • Structural analysis and damage repair
  • • Non-structural analysis and damage repair
Additionally, ALL master technicians must go through the process of certification again every five years.

Driving & Maintenance Tips

Strategic driving methods help ensure the safety of you and your passengers while on the road, but they’ve also got other functions. For instance, you can optimize your vehicle’s gas mileage by practicing strategic driving as well as keep your car’s operating system in the best possible condition. The following are four driving and maintenance tips designed to keep fuel costs down while helping your vehicle stay in optimal condition.
Putting on the Brakes
When you’re coming up on an intersection with traffic signals where you may have to stop at a red or yellow light, it’s recommended that you begin slowing down sooner rather than later. Slowing down provides the possible opportunity for the light to turn green again while you’re in the slow lane. Starting from a full stop always takes more fuel than just slowing down. The only situation in which this does not apply is when an electric vehicle equipped with regenerative brakes, in which case it is advised to come to a complete stop.
Following Other Vehicles
For safety’s sake, it’s essential to leave several car lengths between you and the vehicle in front of you, particularly when traveling on highways. Keeping a good distance behind the car in front of you prevents situations where it’s necessary to slow down and speed up on a regular basis, allowing you to travel at the same clip for the duration of the drive. Maintaining a steady pace not only helps conserve gas, it provides you with an extra layer of safety in the event that any of the vehicles in front of you decide to suddenly slow down or stop. You will also have the opportunity to act in time to avoid any accidents that occur in front of you on the highway.
Use Cruise Control
If your vehicle is equipped with cruise control, using it while traveling on the highway can help maximize your gas mileage. Those who don’t have a cruise control feature in their vehicles should strive to keep to the same speed because cars use less gas when speed fluctuations aren’t a major factor. Although the optimal cruising speed for saving gas is 55 mph, many modern highways have higher posted speed limits, so keep within that speed in order not to impede the flow of traffic.
Proper Maintenance Matters
Spark plugs that are past their prime, worn out sensors, and other neglected vehicle maintenance matters generally result in higher gas mileage. Tires are another important factor. If tires are low in air pressure, for instance, vehicle engines have to work harder to make them move, resulting in higher fuel usage. Improper air pressure also causes tires to wear out prematurely and can be a safety hazard as well. Taking proper care of your vehicle also ensures that when the time comes for you to trade up, you’ll get a higher trade in or resale value.
